The strong demand for the journal was maintained in 2023, with 225,051 articles downloaded in the course of the year, a 37% increase compared to 2022.
The number of article downloads is nearly ten times higher than it was ten years ago. This is largely thanks to agreements between Springer and authors’ institutions – often universities – that enable articles to be made available for free as part of an “Open Access” arrangement, significantly widening the readership of the journal.
Articles published in 2023 that are free to download covered topics as diverse as equal marriage rights, access to documents, Next Generation EU, the European Health Union, product liability and artificial intelligence.
The authors included leading practitioners from the judiciary, private practice and public administration as well as top academics from across Europe.
